MOVIE NIGHT
COMING OF AGE
Diary of a Teenage Girl
Lazy brown dog
White Oleander
After finding the book by chance at the thrift store and loving it, I was so excited to finally watch the adaptation! However... It left me wishing I watched the movie first. Feeing my face slowly drop once I realise they'd be cutting a good majority of the book (as well as making Paul a larger part of Astrid's character arc) is going into my top 10 worst feelings ever. The ending with the suitcases feels less earned as each foster home, fleeting connection and their aftermaths are rushed through. With how the book is structured, each home is integral to understanding to Astrid's character arc especially in relation to feminity, sexuality, relationships and art. I feel as if a longform format would have gave the source material more attention to detail and time to breathe. The sets and costuming are what I hear praised the most and I understand why, they did a great job at visually representing each period in her life. I feel pretenious saying it but stick to the book.
